Eritrea, slavery, torture, oppression: is this the independence?

Today is the 25th anniversary of Eritrea’s independence.
But the leaders of the former Italian Colony betrayed their people.
Instead of establishing a real democracy,
they’ve built one of the most cruel and bloody
dictatorships of the world.
Africa ExPress received this video made by some young lucky Eritreans
who were able to escape to Europe. We are happy to publish it.
The journalists of Africa ExPress believe in human rights
and are committed to defending, of course, freedom of expression.
We dedicate this to the thousands of Eritreans
that fled their own country and died during their hopeful trip.

The story that we decided
to tell isn’t just a story, it’s the real life of thousands of young Eritreans.

May 24,2016, the 25th year of independence of Eritrea, its a day that should be a day of celebration.

But we, the young Eritreans born and raised in Italy, asked to ourselves some questions:
What we have to celebrate after we lost thousands of young Eritreans in the Mediterranean sea, in Libya, in Sinai till today?

What we have to celebrate while our mothers and fathers are still crying about their children that had the courage to escape from a country that make them slave? Some of them dead and some of them saved.

What we have to celebrate in a country where if you speak against the regime you could be imprisoned because there is no laws no constitution that defends your rights?

What we have to celebrate when a country that is empty, without the young generation that is fleed away in search of freedom and democracy?

We wanted to create this video for the 25th year of independence to point up the real situation that there is in Eritrea, we are hoping that the message will arrive to everybody, opposition and supporters.

We want to apologize in advance if there will be some mistakes in our Tigrigna, we know that we have to improve it but we tried our best.

LETS STAND WITH OUR PEOPLE AND OPEN OUR EYES, TOMORROW HISTORY WILL ASK YOU!

Thank you so Much
